In early February 2016, bike racing team Giant Alpecin started a cooperation with TU Delft to research and test a new time trial suit for the Dutch team rider Tom Dumoulin. To be able to do an accurate set of tests using the latest particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique, a 1:1 scale lifelike mannequin of Tom Dumoulin was needed. In cooperation with a fellow student, we designed 3D printable parts using Rhinoceros and printed on modified Ultimaker Original 3D printers. The project was separated into six different stages: 3D scanning, slicing of the model, 3D printing, assembling, refining, and testing. The mannequin was shown in musea, the Dutch Design Week, various news sites and other media.
